The age of the earth is estimated at 4.6 billion years. During the course of this immense period of time, the earth evolved from a cloud of cosmic dust, undergoing constant changes into what we know today.

The earth originated probably as a result of a formation of clusters of minuscule particles of cosmic dust and gases, where these were constantly bombarded and joined by new mass particles until finally the whole mass began circling around the sun as the third of a total of nine planets. In the beginning, the earth was hot and it dotted with countless volcanoes. It lacked oxygen and atmosphere. During that stage, life on Earth was impossible.

The earth was slowly cooling down, allowing water vapour and gases to escape and create an atmosphere. It started to rain and the oceans formed. The most important fossils of this kind are the trilobites and graptolites. However, within this immense time period, there already existed numerous mollusks, crustaceans, first vertebrates, etc., which evolved in ever greater diversity. By the end of the Paleozoic era there existed the first vertebrates - reptiles, which deposited their eggs on the ground. They evolved from the amphibians. In addition, during the Paleozoic era, the mountain range of Ural originated, uniting Europe and Asia into one continental block. The Appalachians also originated near the end of this era.

During the following era, the Mesozoic, which ended 66 million years ago, emerged the American Andes and Rocky Mountains. There occurred a mass extinction of approximately 90 percent of all animal species. For a long time, dinosaurs dominated life on Earth. They included inhabitants of the oceans, flying dinosaurs as well as land animals. However, they were not the only ones who were evolving. First birds and even small mammals began to appear. During the Jurassic period, i.e., the middle part of the Mesozoic era, a major portion of the European continental mass was flooded, but during the period that followed, the Cretaceous, this continent returned to its original form. These floods explain the fact that marine fossils were found in mountainous areas. When the dinosaurs and numerous reptiles became extinct and, with the dawn of the Tertiary period of the newest era of the Earth 65 million years ago, the Cenozoic, a great diversity of mammals began to appear. Some 55 million years ago horses, proboscideans, and artiodactyls (even-toed ungulates or hoofed mammals) first appeared, followed by (38 million years ago) the anthropoids (apes), hogs, deer, and other animals. The mountain ranges of Alps, Pyrenees, Caucasus, and Atlas emerged during this period.

During the Quaternary period of the Cenozoic period (following the Tertiary period), the global climate change occurred. Cold periods alternated with warm periods, giant glaciers and enormous inland masses of ice formed and, in the warm periods that followed, there were great floods as a consequence of the melting of these ice masses. Present-day human emerged at the end of this period.

The Earliest Time Period of the Earth (Precambrian)

Geologically, Precambrian Time is the earliest era. It encompasses the time from the formation of the earth's crust more than four billion years ago to the beginning of the Cambrian Era, approximately 590 million years ago, and represents more than 80 percent of the entire history of the earth.

The earliest part of the Precambrian, called Archaean, encompasses the first 1.5 billion years from the origin of the earth. We know very little about this time period. Also, it is not absolutely clear how the earth originated. A part of the sun may have broken away, resulting in the planetary system, which includes our earth, or it may been the result of clusters of cosmic particles.

The prevailing hypothesis is that, when the sun originated through tremendous heat and cooling (contraction), it began to cool down. Matter particles swirling around the sun were transformed by condensation into gases, ice, and radioactive matter, forming new celestial bodies (planetoids). The planetoids, due to their gravity, attracted more and more particles until they became planets circling the sun.

It took at least 10 billion years for the Sun and protoplanets to emerge. The process of formation of planets, together with their moons, possibly ended approximately 5 billion years ago. We call this period "the star era." This is when the Archaean period begins. Following its formation, the earth began to cool down. This process proceeded relatively quickly because the temperature difference between the universe and the earth's crust was considerable.

The atmosphere, which most likely consisted mainly of water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen, also cooled down. Water began to form, evaporating constantly, until it turned into "primeval rain" and flooded the earth's surface, which still continued to cool down. The existing rocks were therefore scattered and formed the first rock layers. Oxygen, indispensable for animals and plants, did not yet exist, for which reason life could not originate on earth at that time.

The Archaean period is followed by the Proterozoic period. In recent years, rocks were discovered in different regions of the world which, according to detailed studies and calculations, date back 3.8 billion years. The earliest ones come from sedimentary rocks from South Africa and Greenland. Very few fossils exist from that time and the majority of them are fossilised plants. In the earliest rocks we find mainly filament and spheroidal microorganisms - single-cell algae, while in younger rocks there are already branching filamentous algae and primitive fungi (lichens). These were found in coarse-grained limestone in Ontario and in the rocks from Minnesota and Great Britain.

The Precambrian animal fossils are documented very seldomly. Probably only at the end of this era there existed mainly cnidarians, articulates, hydrozoans, and medusoids. For these mollusks the fossilisation was rather difficult and therefore findings are very rare. During the Cambrian period, however, live organisms having solid body parts began to occur on a larger scale, for which reason their fossils are may be more commonly found. By all indications, in the Precambrian period, the continental regions were empty and desolate.

There were probably inhospitable masses of bare rocks since the slowly emerging life was developing in shallow seas. While the first prokaryota (meaning lacking nucleus) consumed "primeval soup" and during the process of acquiring energy liberated only a small amount of oxygen, with the occurrence of organic matter interacting with solar rays, the production of oxygen increased considerably.

In this manner the content of oxygen in the atmosphere increased, a consequence of which was the formation of a protective ozone layer which deflects damaging ultraviolet sunrays, where only under this protective layer could life on Earth originate.

It is assumed that the temperature was between 0 and 50 degrees Celsius because only on the basis of this assumption could life originate. It is possible that, at that time, ice covered extensive regions. However, it may be assumed that the Earth was not completely covered by masses of ice. As documented by numerous fossils, a number of primitive marine species evolved during the early Cambrian.

The Paleozoic Period of the Earth

The Paleozoic period of the Earth is the time period between the Precambrian and Mesozoic periods. This era lasted approximately 340 million years and is divided into several periods: Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian.

Cambrian is the earliest part of the Paleozoic. Its name is taken from the Roman name for northern Wales, "Cambria," where rocks from this period were found. They all lived on the seafloor and medusae existed in the waters. Flora consisted mainly of a vast variety of algae and seaweed. Land plants and animals were not yet in existence but evolved later.

The Cambrian period is followed by the Ordovician period. This period takes its name from a Celtic tribe of Ordovics who inhabited northern Wales and covers the time period between 505 and 439 million years ago. The geographic situation was similar to the one that existed during the Cambrian period but the continents continued to come closer and their coasts were became more flooded. There was an ice age during the Ordovician period. In South America, it is possible to see the moraines deposited by glaciers. The fauna of the invertebrates evolved mainly in the seas during warm climate regions.

Deposits in dark slates indicate that, in the deep waters, lived multi-cell (metazoan) graptolites, an extinct type of flagelliform with a hard exterior chitin skeleton, who formed colonies. A great variety of calcarea evolved in shallow seas. In grainy calcareous layers, we find generally brachiopods and bryozoa, relatives of today's mussels, as well as a great diversity of trilobites. The body of these articulates was covered by a chitin carapace consisting of three interconnected parts. In addition, there were corals and crinoids. The first vertebrates also evolved and possibly the first primitive fish which, however, did not have yet fins or jaws.

There were no complex plants yet, but blue and green algae were spreading from salty seawater to fresher coastal waters. Traces of tracks of reptilian animals similar to centipedes were found in petrified sandbanks dating to the Ordovician. If any animal species existed on land, there would have had to be plants to sustain these animals. However, according to extensive research and calculations, plants did not exist until the following period, called the Silurian period.

The Silurian period is the third period of the earth's Paleozoic stage and its name is derived from the pre-Celtic tribe Silurs, who lived in Wales. It encompasses a period between 438 and 408 million years ago.

From a geographical point of view, there existed two completely interlocked continents; the northern part called the Laurasia and the southern part called the Gondwana. Both parts were alternatively more or less under water. The north pole at that time was probably in the northern Pacific Ocean and it is assumed that the south pole was situated in southwestern Africa. The equator crossed from southeastern Europe, over northern Australia and Greenland to the centre of America.

The climate was mostly humid and warm, turning a little drier at the end of the Silurian. This is indicated by limestone, gypsum, and rock salt dating from that time. This rock salt forms today's salt deposits.

The most common marine animals were invertebrates such as graptolites, trilobites (articulates), and simple corals (cnidarians). Crinoids, as common at that time as algae, consisted of calycinal bodies anchored in the bottom of the sea by means of their stalk. Their bodies were surrounded by tentacles. Corals, which built enormous cliffs that still fascinate scientists today, became extinct approximately 230 million years ago. They were replaced by today's corals, now found in warm seawaters. Marine scorpions and articulates grew to gigantic proportions of up to two metres (Pterygotus).

First jawless fish, which did not have bones but rather a cartilaginoid skeleton, appeared in the seas. We are aware of their existence because they had small bony plates on their head and body, where these plates became fossilised. Two of these species survive today: the eel-like fresh-water lampreys and the slimy, worm-like blennies (blenniidae). At the end of the Silurian period, the first primeval ferns and club moss (lycopodium) appeared on land.

The Devonian period, the fourth period of the earth's Paleozoic stage, which is named after the English county of Devonshire, comprises the period between 490 and 360 million years ago.

The land masses of the continents were constantly moving also during this period. The climate of the northern hemisphere was warm while, in the area of the south pole, there were several ice belts. In linkage to the first beginning in the preceding Silurian period, the intensive evolution of higher types of terran plants continued. These plants were generally horsetails and ferns which, in the late Devonian period, would grow as tall as trees. Thus fauna was injected with new evolutionary impulses.

Numerous new kinds of animals began to evolve, mainly fish. The Devonian period is therefore also called the period of fish. The jawless fish of the preceding Silurian period evolved into shield-headed fish which, as the first vertebrates, also had jaws. Originally the skeleton of the first vertebrates was not formed by bones but by cartilaginoid matter.

During the Devonian period, there were also thorny-finned/lobe-finned fish (ichthyostega). They had thick fins and rigid skeleton and they were able to remain on land. By means of these fins, they could move on land and even abandon a dried-out lake or river and find another water habitat. The ichthyostega are considered as a transitional form toward land animals.

The sea was the habitat mainly of corals, ammonites, snails, conchoidal crayfish and echiderms, as well as trilobites and similar kinds. Scorpions, arachnids, terran reptiles, myriapeds and early, wingless insects were evolving on land.

The Carboniferous period (from the Latin word for coal), is the fifth geological segment of the Earth's Paleozoic. This period, which began 360 million years ago and which ended 286 million years ago, is also called the period of anthracite because, during that time, the largest deposits of this coal in the history of the Earth were formed, a result of a conjunction of favourable climatic, biological, and geological factors.

The climate in central Europe, which at that time was situated near the equator, was tropical and humid, similar to the climate that is found today in the rainforest of the Amazon. During the course of the Carboniferous period, there were powerful movements of the lithospheric plates which resulted in the formation of mountain ranges and valleys between them. Many regions were alternately just above the sea level and slightly below the sea level and dense forests grew in the coastal regions. These were periodically covered by water; when the sea level decreased, these forests underwent vigorous growth again.

The forests consisted of club moss growing up to 30 metres, ferns and horsetails and resembled today's tropical swampy forests. As a consequence of the fluctuation of the water levels, these forests were constantly flooded by water, which formed sediments. When oxygen could not penetrate, peat began to form and later on coal.

The last geological period of the earth's Paleozoic stage was the Permian period. It represents the period between 286 and 248 million years ago and was named after a former Russian province of Perm situated west of the Ural Mountains.

At that time, Gondwana connected with the northern continents to create a gigantic continental mass called Pangea, resulting in an extensive rising of mountains. This supercontinent was surrounded by a great ocean (Panthalassa). Here, corals, ammonites, and large single-cell animals continued to exist. This was the only period when all the continents formed one continental mass.

Many of the kinds of animals indicated earlier became extinct during the Permian. Causes of this phenomenon are not clear. It is possible that it was linked to the gradual receding of the oceans.

Human Rights Watch questions Guggenheim museum labor

: Guggenheim museum officials have not addressed concerns about how workers would be treated during construction of a Frank Gehry-designed art museum in the United Arab Emirates, a human rights organization said.

Construction has not started, but the Persian Gulf nation has a "systemic" worker abuse problem at other construction sites in the booming region, Human Rights Watch spokeswoman Sarah Leah Whitson said Tuesday.

"We know how construction workers are used and abused in the U.A.E.," she said. "We know with confidence that workers are going to be subjected to these conditions unless the museum does something to insist otherwise."

Officials of the Abu Dhabi museum said Tuesday they had not seen the Human Rights Watch statement and could not immediately comment.

But Whitson said the museum foundation had failed to respond to numerous requests for meetings to discuss how to ensure that workers are not exploited.

"If they ignore the abuse of construction workers so common in the U.A.E., they will put the Guggenheim's reputation at risk, as well as the laborers."

Last year, Human Rights Watch issued a report on labor conditions in the Middle East, saying the United Arab Emirates had "abdicated almost entirely from its responsibility to protect workers' rights."

"Our laws are tougher than anyone else's in the Mideast," Al Kaabi said at the time. "But the lack of inspectors means sometimes we don't see these problems."

The United Arab Emirates already has issued laws addressing many of the abuses in the Human Rights Watch report: workers' salaries and passports held back by companies, dangerous working conditions, shady labor agents whose fees keep workers locked in debt and labor law enforcers beholden to connected companies, not to workers.

The United Arab Emirates' ruler, Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also announced tough penalties, up to life imprisonment, against trafficking in humans, which has illegally taken domestic servants, prostitutes and even child camel race jockeys into the country.

Whitson called the changes "cosmetic" and said the problem needed to be addressed systemically.

"The museum has the chance now, but they will be powerless to stop it once the contracts are signed," she said.

The new Guggenheim museum would sit on a manmade spit jutting into the Gulf from the currently uninhabited Saadiyat Island, which lies adjacent to Abu Dhabi. With a price tag of just more than $200 million (€136 million), the building would be completed in about five years.

Abu Dhabi, like its flashier neighboring emirate, Dubai, is a liberal, freewheeling city in the throes of an energy-fueled economic boom. It is quickly filling with luxury housing, office towers and resorts.

One of the biggest misconceptions about the teaching profession is that teaching jobs are easy to find. For some reason the general public thinks that teaching is something people fall back on when all else fails…nothing can be farther from the truth.

The truth is teaching jobs are NOT a dime a dozen.

There are so many people applying for teaching positions that it is extremely difficult to even get an interview for a teaching position.

Unfortunately, getting the teacher interview may actually seem like a job in itself.

If you think the traditional method of simply sending in your teacher résumé and cover letter will do the trick you are sorely mistaken.

While your resume and cover letter are important, you still need to do more if you want to make absolutely certain you get the teacher interview.

Without a doubt the number one secret to landing the teacher interview is…contacts and connections.

While this may seem obvious, most potential teachers don't exactly understand what is meant by a connection/contact or how to effectively use them.

Of course, if you are the daughter of the superintendent of schools you probably won't have a difficult time getting a teacher interview.

However, your connection does not have to be all that great. Nearly any connection will help you land a teacher interview. Do you know a teacher in the school you are applying to? Do you know a parent whose child goes to the school? Do you know a school board member? A secretary? Support staff? Do you know anyone who is in any way connected with the school you want to interview with? If so, have that person specifically ask the administrator to give you an interview.

Remember, your connection is not trying to get you the job, your connection is trying to get you the interview…it is up to you to get the job!

However, you don't necessarily have to have a contact with direct connections to the school. Any contact will do. In fact, your contact and the administrator may have never even met before. For example, a college professor, your cooperating teacher/supervisor, another teacher or administrator can most certainly get you that teacher interview.

The key is to get that contact to make a phone call for you. A phone call from one administrator to another (even if they have never met) will definitely get your resume "flagged" and most certainly get you an interview for a teaching position. Again, this just gets you the interview…it is up to you to get the job.

How do I know?

Simple, this is precisely how I got a teacher interview for the school I am currently teaching at. I was moving from New York to Florida and I had my New York principal make a phone call to a principal in Florida and the very next day I got the interview. Keep in mind, these two administrators never met and I was applying for a social studies teaching position and competing against 150 other applicants.

Just to prove my point, when the interview started I was told by the administrators conducting the interview that the only reason they decided to interview me was because my principal made that phone call.

Again, don't underestimate the power that a phone call can make from even a weak connection…this may be the single biggest factor in helping you land that teacher interview.

In this department you will find fossilized animals, big and small, along with prehistoric skeletons. The dinosaur room was an exciting place for my classmates and I to visit, as kids. We saw Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops, to name a few. Great fun for any child who loves prehistoric stuff. Seeing the massive bones and the overall size of each animal, seeing these exhibits will give kids the ability to imagine just how large these ancient creatures really were.

Archeology - Studying the ancient history of humans and their cultures

At the Carnegie Natural History Museum, you can actually watch the archeologists work on digging out artifacts out of a big, block of dirt. It is interesting to watch real scientists do their jobs in front of the public. When visiting the Cleveland Museum, scientists also dug out items from a large block of dirt, but at that time it was not public. A friend of mine used to work for the museum and he gave me a tour of the basement, and the archeology workroom. Even as an adult, it left an impression on me.

You can see exhibits of ancient cultures worldwide, such as the pyramid at Chichen Itza in Mexico or the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Learn through dioramas and narration how various groups lived their everyday lives by seeing pottery, tools and clothing.

How can we expect our youth to be good leaders if many of our educators and parents are not? Emotional intelligence helps us to form a strong foundation for making good life decisions. Studies show that at best, IQ only contributes about 20 percent to the factors that determine life success, leaving 80 percent to other forces.

We expect our youth to graduate from school with the tools necessary to be successful throughout life. Most of us can agree that these expectations are not being met. For example, South Carolina has a dropout rate somewhere between 35 % and 55 %. At a 50% dropout rate, the South Carolina economy is losing $273 million per year in revenue from lost wages, taxes and productivity for only one year of South Carolina high school dropouts. Multiply that by a 30-year lifetime and the costs to the South Carolina economy is $8.19 Billion for one lost class. We can multiply that cost by years of dropouts and then multiply it across the country.

Statistics also show that high school dropouts are 3.5 times more likely than high school graduates to be arrested and 8 times as likely to be in jail or prison. So when we add in the cost of jails, prisons, alcohol and drug abuse centers and mental institutions, we begin to get an understanding of the cost to society of this lost potential.

What is happening with our challenged youth? They feel they are not being heard and accepted. They are voting with their feet by not completing their education. We have been attempting to fit them into a small box of possibilities while they want to expand into the vastness of their potentiality. Instead of hearing the dreams and desires of these challenged yet talented kids, we have been telling them what they are to become. Many youth leave high school and college not knowing what they want. They may be discouraged from pursuing their dreams by those who have no dreams. They do not get engaged. They do not understand how the work they are doing in school applies to their lives.

In order to capture the passion of others, we must build emotional bonds. Brain research shows that all our decisions are made by routing sensory signals through the emotional part of the brain. If there is a compelling event, the brain can literally be hijacked by this most ancient part of our brain before the thinking brain has a chance to engage.

Almost 2/3 of our values and beliefs are formed before the age of five. Our emotional impressions and memories are based on emotions from our past. They create feelings and feelings create our thoughts. Research has shown that we are over 80% unconscious everyday. In most cases we do not realize that we are making decisions based on beliefs from the past that may or may not apply to the current situation. The way we think causes our behavior. Our behavior causes responses or reactions from others that either build up or tear down relationships. We then build successful or unsuccessful outcomes. The resulting cycle is the way we think becomes our habits of thought and these habits of thought become our attitudes.
Attitudes are a key component of emotional intelligence and play a major role in success. We can learn to be mindful and responsible for what we are thinking while making a choice for success thoughts. When we have negative thoughts that move us away from our goals, we can recognize them and choose differently. Developing a successful attitude becomes the preferred choice when we determine that we are responsible for choosing positive thoughts that move us closer to our goals.

Another key component of emotional intelligence is building relationships through compassion. We are not islands and we cannot reach our goals alone. For those children who are not taught how to build relationships, they may be ostracized from groups. Many are not taught to be compassionate and do not understand and value each other's differences. Children are taught to be competitive and may undermine each other as a matter of habit. All of this carries over into our adult life unless we learn how to overcome our relationship obstacles. However, when we are taught how to build relationships, we learn to recognize the value of each person. Even relationship-challenged youth can learn to engage with others to assist them to achieve their goals. It is a win – win for everyone involved.

A third key component is to build hope in us and in others by establishing goals. We want and need to have a vision and a purpose in our life. We want to understand what is important to us in the social, mental, physical, ethical, family and career areas of our life. These are the things that get us out of bed in the morning and that give us passion. These things will clarify for us what our values are. We can then establish what is important. By setting goals and moving toward them, we find hope. When we are hopeful, we find our joy. We can then play a part in helping others to be hopeful and to achieve their aspirations.

These concepts help to build strong leaders. There is a great need to educate our students about what it takes to make good life decisions. This can only be carried out by educators and parents who understand it themselves. So I repeat the question … can we really expect our children to be good leaders if our educators and parents are not? When we do not understand the underlying basis for deciding what is a good choice and what is a bad choice, we have no method in place to help ourselves and others to recognize what is moving ourselves and others closer to the kind of life we want and what is moving us further away from it.

The Education and Economic Development Act is a South Carolina law that has a great deal of insight. It requires, in addition to several other significant provisions that character education be taught. When we build our educators into emotionally intelligent leaders with an emphasis on attitude, interpersonal skills and goal achievement, they will engage with students in their dreams and educate them in leadership skills. Then, we will truly have a totally engaged student population who are mindful of their attitudes, compassionate for others and have hope for their future.

Splinter Cell's dynamic environments

Welcome to part four in our massive Splinter Cell: Conviction week, where the Ubisoft Montreal developers talk us through a different section of the game each day. Just in case you missed them, you can go back to the beginning and read part one here.

In part four we speak to associate producer Daniel Roy about how Sam Fisher will interact with the environment. And it sounds impressive. So we all know you're Sam Fisher, a fugitive hunted by the cops. At one point in the game you'll have to access a data server hidden in the middle of a park in Washington. "Walking towards your objective, you quickly join a small group of people moving alongside a war memorial, in order to avoid the attention of a cop strolling nearby," Roy explains. "Reaching an open area, you decide you need a quick distraction to progress further. You walk up to a protestor lecturing a small audience, and quickly snatch her laptop and throw it on the ground. The crowd is shocked by this, and call for the cops. The cop begins to walk towards the onlookers, but you avoid his gaze and briskly walk along before he can figure out who's responsible for the commotion."

This is the kind of interaction with the crowd Ubisoft has been trumpeting in the awesome-looking Assassin's Creed. "Having reached the building, you stand in front of a security guard. The guard notices you, and you know he's starting to put two and two together," continues Roy. "Very soon now he will identify you as that fugitive that's been all over the news. You turn around and walk towards the back of the building. He follows you to question you. As soon as you're out of sight of the crowd, you take him by surprise and knock him unconscious by throwing him violently into a dumpster. You quickly make your way inside the building and hack the data server, but now the cops have congregated outside."

There's a hot dog vendor is within sight and Fisher takes out a silenced pistol and fires, creating chaos and mayhem in the park. Joining the rampaging crowd, Sam runs out of the park, unnoticed by the cops who see you as just another panicked bystander fleeing for his life. Designers have been striving for this kind of dynamic environment for years, but what else is the fifth Splinter Cell doing that we haven't seen before?

"First of all, everything in Conviction - and I mean everything - is dynamic and bound to be pushed over, thrown or broken. This isn't just a dozen objects in the environment; it's everything, from the staplers on a desk, to the desks themselves. The dynamic environment is Sam's primary weapon. He can throw chairs in his enemy's face, throw them into a desk, block a doorway with a bookcase, flip a table to create cover. We want players to look at all the tidy environment of, say, a newspaper office, and think, 'I can use this desk as cover in a tight situation, and then this printer as a deadly weapon.'"

The AI itself will also use the dynamic environment to full advantage Roy tells us. "We not only improved the AI to account for the dynamic environment, we actually rebuilt their AI around it. Enter a firefight with them, and you'll see them improvise cover by flipping over tables, for instance. It's quite a rush to think you've got an enemy AI pinned down, only to see him rush behind a desk and flip it over, shooting you back from the safety of an improvised cover."

And how will all this super cool new tech change the experience? "In previous Splinter Cells, Sam was equipped by Third Echelon, and could rely on his gear in all situations," said Roy. "Now that he's a fugitive, he only has his immediate environment as a weapon. And Sam being Sam, you can expect him to be deadly with any weapon you put in his hands. He can use it to distract and confuse his enemies, for instance, by exploding a propane tank in order to create confusion with the cops; or he can use the environment as a weapon in hand-to-hand combat.

"Sam can throw his enemies on desks, tables, containers, etc., or slam their heads against nearby walls, or throw computer monitors, printers and chairs at them, or momentarily confound them by sweeping the contents of a desk at their face. Basically, we want the player to enter a rich environment filled with all sorts of elements, and feel they have an entire arsenal at their disposal."

Our exclusive screens of the game show various sequences that Roy was only to happy to explain to us. "Having a character pick up a chair in traditional videogames isn't too hard. But if you want your environment to be dynamic, you need that chair to be able to fall randomly - any way whatsoever. Suddenly, you can't just play a predetermined animation anymore. You need actual artificial intelligence in order for the character to determine where he's gonna put his hands to pick up the chair, and then do it.

"That's why every game you've seen so far using physics - even Half-Life 2 - shied away from showing you the character actually picking up the object with his hands. We used the chair as it is a very complicated object, with lots of physical constraints (in picking it, but also by moving it to be able to hold it properly). Once we managed to deal with the chair, almost every other object seemed easy to deal with."

The crack team of Montreal coders has blended procedural (or code-driven) animation with motion capture in order to create an animation system that will be able to figure out how to pick up a chair in any position. "Whenever you're going to pick up that chair, Sam is going to approach the object in a slightly different manner, and place his hands just at the right spots to pick up the chair in a believable way."

But what about objects with round surfaces? "Through figuring out how to pick up a chair, we created a general system that would allow picking up any object, whether it's a TV, a box, a metal plate, etc. We assign points to the object that represent likely places where Sam will want to put his hands - we call these 'handles'. Then, when the player decides to pick up this object, the animation system figures out which handles are most optimal for picking up that object, and through a process called inverse kinematics (IK), we create code-driven animations that will generate realistic movements for Sam's hands as he moves them to the handles.

"For a round table, the principle is the same. We put handles on the side of the table, and when Sam approaches the table to pick it up, we play a realistic animation for Sam to bend forward and pick up the table, while at the same time the code drives animations with the goal of placing Sam's hands in the right places. Use realistic motion capture animation elements in the blend, and you've got a system where an object can be picked up at any time, regardless of how it fell."

All in Montreal has combined rag doll physics with Sam's animations to create a more realistic punch and throw reaction. "Rag-doll physics is great when you want to have a character, shall we say, violently interact with the physics in the environment. Imagine that Sam picks up an enemy and wants to throw him in the environment; the grab, and the throw itself, will be driven by mo-cap or key-frame animations, for maximum drama and impact. Then, as soon as the enemy is in the air, we use rag-doll to control how he will interact with the environment.

"This leads to very spectacular moments when, for instance, Sam throws an armed guard into a stuffed bookcase. The throw itself is very cinematic, using non-rag-doll animation physics; but the impact is not scripted in any way, and the way the guard will hit his head, or the way the bookcase and all its contents will fall on him, is completely driven by physics. As you can imagine, there's a lot of fun to be had throwing people into things in Conviction," Roy concludes (Extracted from ComputerAndVideoGames.com).

They resurrect the past for us and makes us anticipate the future.

Many of the world's illustrious men reached intellectual heights despite of the fact that they were too poor to attend school or physically or intellectually challenged from the get go. But through the silent teachers who lived in books, which the habit of reading they nurtured, they achieved success in each field they pursued. What is Design?

If you peruse the Internet long enough you will discover that there are many who have come to the conclusion that evolution is a proven fact. These individuals required no further proof than to believe evolution is the mechanism for origin creation. What's more, most of these individuals will defy anyone who would say otherwise.

To consider the possibility that life as we know it was the product of design stirs anger against religion, a way of life or even parents.

Perhaps it makes sense to ask, "What is design?" Lehigh University Chemistry Professor, Michael J. Behe gives us the answer. "Design is simply the purposeful arrangement of parts. The scientific question is how we detect design. This can be done in various ways, but design can most easily be inferred for mechanical objects. While walking through a junkyard you might observe separated bolts and screws and bits of plastic and glass, most scattered, some piled on top of each other, some wedged together. Suppose you saw a pile that seemed particularly compact, and when you picked up a bar sticking out of the pile, the whole pile came along with it. When you pushed on the bar it slid smoothly to one side of the pile and pulled an attached chain along with it. The chain in turn yanked a gear which turned three other gears which turned a red-and-white striped rod, spinning it like a barber pole. You quickly conclude that the pile was not a chance accumulation of junk, but was designed, was put together in that order by an intelligent agent, because you see that the components of the system interact with great specificity to do something." [1]

Behe provides the description of a man who had been crushed to death. When authorities come to the scene to investigate they begin to compile physical evidence. What they missed in their investigation was an elephant standing n the middle of the scene. The elephant was obvious to those standing nearby, but the investigators were more concerned about the body placement and other issues to notice the elephant.

This is what we see in the exploration of origins. Too many scientists miss the designer because they are so firmly focused on the design itself.

In many ways this relentless pursuit of evolutionary theory is not unlike previous era's scientific elite who were challenged in their beliefs when new facts were discovered. In all of history there always seems to be a remnant of those who are willing to believe a disproven worldview.

This mentality may be no more apparent than the Flat Earth Society who continues to defend their belief that the earth is flat and any photos to the contrary are the work of a Hollywood film studio in concert with a government cover up.

The failing in evolutionary theory is a separation between scientific fact and evolutionary theory. Hypotheses are developed to account for errors while facts remain difficult at best, impossible at worst, to come by while a designer is standing in the midst of a marvelous creation waiting to be noticed.
